Fayette Medical Center Offers Psychiatry Services Via Telemedicine
Fayette Medical Center now provides psychiatric assessment for patients in its emergency department via telemedicine.
FMC is working with qler Solutions, a company based in Reston, Va. The company’s board-certified psychiatrists interview patients on a secure video-telephone service similar to FaceTime or Skype. Based on their assessment, the psychiatrists work with emergency department physicians to provide the patient medicine, referral for follow-up or transfer to a psychiatric facility like North Harbor Pavilion at Northport Medical Center.
The service is available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year to FMC’s emergency room patients.
“We are excited at the opportunity to expand needed services for our patients through the use of telemedicine,” FMC Administrator Donald Jones said.
Across the country, patients in need of behavioral health care often struggle to access care when it is needed most. Providing behavioral health services using internet-based technology allows FMC to expand access to care and accelerate treatment to this population in need, according to Jones.
“Through the partnership with qler, our patients will experience reduced wait times for specialist care and improved outcomes,” Jones said.
Kathy Seward, MD, chief medical officer for qler, agreed.
“Patients with psychiatric illness often have to wait hours, or even days, to see a psychiatrist,” Seward said. “With the use of telemedicine, we are able to provide care immediately.”
