Chronic or slow-healing wounds can be painful, frustrating, and make everyday activities difficult. The Wound Care services at DCH Health System provide specialized evaluation and treatment for patients whose wounds have not healed with standard care.  Our goal is to relieve discomfort, treat the underlying cause, and help you return to your normal routine as quickly and safely as possible.

What is wound care?

Wound care is a specialized medical service focused on diagnosing and treating wounds that are not healing as expected.  These may be related to diabetes, poor circulation, pressure, infection, surgery, or injury.  Our team uses evidence-based treatments and advanced technologies to support your body’s natural healing process, protect surrounding skin, and lower your risk of complications or hospitalizations.

Conditions we treat

We care for a wide range of acute and chronic wounds, including:
• Diabetic foot ulcers and neuropathic ulcers
• Pressure injuries (bedsores)
• Venous and arterial leg ulcers
• Non-healing surgical or traumatic wounds
• Radiation-related skin injuries
• Infected or complicated wounds, including bone infections
• Skin tears and other complex or hard-to-heal wounds

If you are unsure whether your wound needs specialty care, our team can evaluate your condition and recommend the next step.

Treatments and services offered

Your treatment plan is tailored to your wound type, overall health, and lifestyle.  Depending on your needs, your care may include:
• Comprehensive wound and medical assessment
• Advanced wound dressings and topical therapies
• Debridement (removal of damaged or infected tissue)
• Compression therapy for leg swelling and venous disease
• Offloading devices and total contact casting to reduce pressure
• Negative pressure (vacuum-assisted) wound therapy
• Bioengineered skin substitutes and biological dressings
• Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (at eligible locations)
• Nutrition support and infection management
• Ongoing education on wound care at home and prevention

Throughout your care, we closely monitor your progress and adjust your plan as your wound heals.

What to expect at your visit

At your first visit, we will review your medical history, examine your wound, and may order tests to better understand why it is not healing.  We will talk with you about your goals, explain treatment options in clear terms, and begin a plan that fits your needs.  Follow-up visits allow our team to track healing, change dressings, and update your plan as needed.

Your next step

If you have a wound that has not improved in several weeks, or you are concerned about signs of infection such as redness, swelling, or drainage, specialized wound care may help.  Contact our Wound Care team to schedule an appointment or ask whether you need a referral.
