Donor Milk Program

Donor Milk Program

DCH Health System offers a donor milk program for mothers with excess breast milk to support premature infants in the neonatal intensive care units (NICUs) at DCH Regional Medical Center and Northport Medical Center.

The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends the use of human breastmilk – mother’s own or pasteurized donor milk if mom’s own milk is not available – for all preterm infants. DCH is working with Prolacta Bioscience® to provide 100% human breastmilk nutritional products to babies in the NICUs at both of its Tuscaloosa County hospitals using breast milk donated by nursing mothers.

Prolacta will manage the qualification process of moms referred from DCH with health screenings and blood testing, along with streamlining the milk collection and shipping process right from moms’ homes. Prolacta’s high-tech manufacturing facility will be used to conduct the safety and quality testing before pasteurizing the human milk products for in-hospital use.

With this program, nursing mothers will be able to donate extra breast milk while supporting premature infants right in their own community.
