A respected expert in modern urology, Dr. Howard Winfield has advanced the specialty through his groundbreaking work in minimally invasive and robotic procedures. Dr. Howard Winfield is a pioneer in the area of minimally invasive urologic surgery. He was the first in the world to perform a laparoscopic partial nephrectomy, and he was one of the first in the world to use the da Vinci Surgical System, a robot-assisted device that allows the surgeon to perform incredibly delicate procedures. He has performed thousands of surgeries using minimally invasive techniques, and he has trained scores of physicians in the use of the da Vinci Surgical System. Prior to relocating to Tuscaloosa in 2009, Dr. Winfield was the Director of Laparoscopic, Robotic and Minimally Invasive Urologic Surgery at the University of Iowa.
