DCH SportsMedicine is a comprehensive service designed to meet the needs and interests of the entire family. Emphasis within the program is on prevention, recognition, evaluation, treatment, rehabilitation and education of sports injuries.
DCH SportsMedicine offers complete health care assistance for athletes of all ages and levels of participation. By providing athletic trainers at athletic events, we are helping to ensure your athlete a quick and safe return to play.
Our athletic trainers are:
Nationally certified and state licensed.
We are the exclusive provider of athletic training services to Tuscaloosa County and City school systems, American Christian Academy, Holy Spirit Catholic School, and Tuscaloosa Academy at no cost to these schools.
Physician guided and directed by Dr. James B. Robinson, our medical director.
At their schools on a daily basis for practice and game coverage. We provide more than 16,500 hours annually to the schools we service.
Serving as a liaison between athletes, coaches, parents and physicians, our goal is to provide local athletes with the best possible health care available.
When Injuries Occur
When an athlete is injured, he or she must report all athletic injuries to the school’s athletic trainer, who will ensure the athlete receives immediate medical evaluation, treatment and medical referral. Additionally, if an athlete is currently under a physician’s care for an injury, he or she should inform their athletic trainer. This helps us to provide the best care possible to each athlete.
DCH SportsMedicine offers pre-participation physical exams two times each year (January and April) for a nominal fee. The Alabama High School Athletic Association and the Alabama Independent School Athletic Association require athletes who plan to try out for sports complete a pre-participation physical examination. DCH SportsMedicine is very excited about our Sports Track program, which is designed to expedite the care of the acutely injured athlete through the Northport Medical Center and DCH Regional Medical Center Emergency Departments. When an athlete has a sports-related injury, they should contact their school’s AT to initiate Sports Track, which must be done within 24 hours of initial injury.
DCH SportsMedicine Sports Injury Clinic
During football season, we offer a Sports Injury Clinic on Saturdays to evaluate, treat, and rehabilitate sports related injuries. We have a team of Sports Medicine trained physicians, certified athletic trainers, and physical therapists onsite to provide the athlete with comprehensive health care. The clinics begin at 8 a.m., and athletes will be seen on a first come, first served basis. Athletes will need to bring their insurance information. The clinic begins the Saturday after the first football game and goes through at least the first round of playoffs, and then week to week after that. For any questions, please contact Sheryl Hendrix, Manager 205-361-0081.
DCH SportsMedicine Fund Run
Each spring, DCH SportsMedicine hosts its Fund Run. Funds raised from the 5K race and one-mile walk/run benefit the DCH SportsMedicine Fund, which purchases medical equipment and supplies for athletic programs in the area. The DCH SportsMedicine Fund is part of the DCH Foundation, Inc. You can support the Fund Run through donations, sponsorship, collecting donations or actually participating in the race.
