Manderson Cancer Center Nurses Receive Clinical Trials Training

6/20/2014

Two nurses from the Lewis and Faye Manderson Cancer Center at DCH Regional Medical Center recently attended a comprehensive two-day course for professional nurses and cancer program administrators to improve access to clinical trials.

Danielle Daniel, Clinical Trials/Research Nurse, and Sandy Barger, Nurse Manager, attended the program. Manderson Cancer Center was one of 50 cancer centers selected to attend this course, which provided provide hands-on training in fundamental aspects of clinical research so that nurses and administrators can implement or augment cancer clinical trials within their institutions.

Clinical research trials for cancer drugs are the backbone of scientific advances against cancer. Participation in local community hospital cancer programs is limited due to lack of research infrastructure and research-trained nurses to work on the trials.

The University of Pennsylvania, Mt. Sinai Medical Center and the City of Hope Comprehensive Cancer Center received a 5-year grant from the National Cancer Institute to conduct this course. The course was conducted by a distinguished faculty of researchers, educators and authors.
